I had the strangest ever experience today. Early last year, I was having breakfast at Melawati, at Deen's, when this well dressed, cultured looking, gentle, silver-haired lady sat down next to me. When her order arrived, she got up to wash her hands and left her bag near me. Me, being the the ever talkative bunny, as opposed to the untalkative bunny here (he is really bloody hilarious like Shaun the Sheep without even opening his mouth, I tell ya), told her when she came back, that she shouldn't leave her bag like that, with snatch thieves all around and all.
So we started talking. And what a nice lady she was. I learnt she was from Berlin. A Malaysian living in Berlin, an ex-journalist who was now freelancing. She came to visit her son and was invited to cover some event, I forgot which. I also found out that she was related (daughter? I forgot...momnesia) to the first Malay president of Singapore, and the founders of the Utusan Group. She was very down to earth despite her stature. When we parted ways, we exchanged business cards and I thought that was that.
A few months later, I received an email from Berlin, it was from her. She said, she was really glad to have met me and found me very engagingly open and it was a heartwarming experience for her. Man...that was so nice of her. (See, I'm not just a bitch..hehe). Her niece's wedding was in November (2008) she said, and she would like to see me again. But we didn't meet then. And I thought, ok, that was that.
This morning after almost a year since I first met her, I went to have breakfast at NZ Wangsa Maju, my usual hangout (yeah, I hate having breakfast alone at home, or just with Maryam , coz I would be spending the day alone later, kinda get cabin fever). Out of the blue, as I finished my puri with Maryam, who kept nagging me to eat at home as in "aren't we supposed to save money, Umi, you TOLD me to remind you, but you never listen!" (yeah, yeah little missy, can't argue with you as always, but "PLEASE...last time ek?", me the mother, begged her little wise missy...)...wait where was I...oh! as I finished the puri, I thought...hmmm...out of the blue, about this lady, Z. Wonder how she is?
Then I looked up...and saw... her! Walking in to have breakfast. At NZ. At the same moment I was thinking of her. What a coincidence! How often does someone fly in from Germany and you meet by design (not chance, I guess) yet again, at a different restaurant. Our eyes met and she was pleasantly surprised. She said, she was just thinking about me this same morning too!...haha. She wanted to have breakfast at Deen, but then changed her mind and came to NZ instead, coz its always nice there in the mornings...airy and quiet.
We laughed and thought that was really weird, the way we both had the same thoughts about people thousands of miles away, and then they suddenly pop up right in front of you. She had another wedding to attend to this time. Another niece.
We had a nice conversation. Abour kids, politics etc.
She told me about this Malaysian lady, Indian, who was horribly raped and savaged last year by Nazis in Germany (MODERN day Nazis mind you). She was waylaid, savaged with a police baton, had her hair shaved and later tied up and dumped like a dog in her garage. Her family was also threatened next. And we talked about how lucky we were, that Malaysia is not like that. That all of us, Malays, Indians, Chinese, fail to see the blessings of this beloved nation of ours. Yes, we have SOME discrimination from all sides, all races, and there still are some weaknesses to be ironed out in terms of attitudes, etc, but on the whole, we do not have mobs roaming around harrasing and violating and murdering other races/immigrants like in Germany and elsewhere, despite what Malaysian believe about these sanctimonious white men and their hypocritical trumpeting of their so-called democracy. The police and whole city were almost in silent collaboration with the mobs, and that was really scary from what I read about the story later. In the end she, the victim, was accused of violating herself...for what purpose...I do no know. She has left Germany with a warning not to return. Before that incident, there were also cases or arson and murder of a young child, which were also blamed on the victims (immigrants) too. Hmmm...justice and human rights the white man's way is certainly strange...has always been actually if one cares to learn history and observe current events in the US, Iraq, Afghanistan and elsewhere.
Anyway, this was about His mysterious wisdom...thinking about someone, and walla! there she is. Someone who lives thousands of miles away. Hmmm...I wish my dream would pop up that way too...hahaha.
Maybe.
Never know...Secrets and the Future are His to Keep. (And why the heck does it always end on that twist, huh? My posts, I mean...)
