When I was a little girl...

I wanted to be:

a stewardess (everybody wanted to be one then...why ah?)
a pilot (ditto)
cikgu
a lawyer (didn't know what that meant then)
a jurutera (ditto, just sounded impressive)
a car designer (ever since I could speak...hmmm...dunno how I came to know what this one was all about from age 5)
saya mahu jadi seorang doktor
saya mahu menjadi seorang doktor haiwan
work with the United Nations
a journalist
an international correspondent
a war correspondent (too much Newsweek, Time)
a writer...like Alistair McLean, Lawrence Sanders, Jeffrey Archer, James Clavell (his war books were okay..others mainly porno lah), James Michener, Danielle Steel was good at first, then became factory-mill standard...and who else,ah?...hmmm..momnesia strikes again....pre-1997 memories are a virtual blur.
a jet-setting hugely successful businesswoman
a Richard Branson
a Donald Trump
a Steven Jobs
a billionairelah!

Nowadays...
I still wannabe a Richard Branson
or a heart surgeon
or a brain surgeon
or a Jamie Oliver (hey, I cooked like him long before he ever learnt how to use the potty)
an Anthony Bourdain
a Nigella
a Bob Blumer...
their jobs look like fun!
one of those Lonely Planets hosts...apanama...oh! Robin Wright? (he sent a video of himself on the loo and got to be famous giler...hmmm...)
an environmental/peace/social activist
a Dr. Jamilah of Mercy Malaysia wannabe...
a stay-at-home mum
a work-from-home mum
a fulltime careerwoman part-time mum?...nah...not me...
a jetsetting glamorous socialite once-in-a-while mum? Nah...will bring the kids along on the jet...

sheesh.

I wannabe everything! Even at 40...(ok I cheated a little... at 41!!! )

Sounds good to me, except for the sexist roles like 'stewardess'. You're so much more than just what you do for a living, my friend!

well, at 43, i still want to be something and i still do not know what yet...didn't realise that it's so hard to find a job that i am passionate about... blame it on the cultural upbringing? good evening, tigress.

Lynn,

Mase kecik2 pramugari was glamorous until I found out it was waitrssing in air...only perk, get to visit overseas lah ;)

Yes, we're much more than what we do for a living. Doing something we enjoy for a living is a big plus, eh?

mm,

you're right about the passion part. I think everywhere macam tu gak la...most graduate to become mere cogs or kulis in someone else's wheel...haha

Are you in Australia, BTW?

To be or not to be, that is the question - Will Shakespeare, hehe

BTW what happened to the tigress ambition?

At my 41, I decided to leave a very promising career in PETRONAS to do everything which I wanted to achieve by my 50 (my list was not as long as yours but I was probably just as very passionate about it).

Looking back I am most thankful of the grace of Allah for the very humbling experience!

I pray that you will decide and act by istikharah prayers and only in Allah you shall put your trust. And that you will believe that what follows will be the best ever!

well, that's why, at this mid point in our lives, i want to do things that i enjoy and for myself. now, because of circumstances and not by choice, i realised that we make our own lives and we get to write our own chapters. hence i want to and will look for something that i enjoy doing and have passion for. that's the intersection that i am at, taking the scenic route and might as well enjoy the ride until i reached the destination wherever that calling is...g'day from melb.

Hi Zen,
Still sharpening the claws...heheh

LadyMarko,
Betui la...Ian Wright! You can still be a designer meh...been looking to design teen, kids' muslimah baju, tapi tak pandai melakar...nak join venture dak? ;)

Mamasista,
Heheh...betul tu..loads of money, nice dresses and rich so tak yah mengharap kat orang and can help others...wouldnt that be nice?

Dengan your smile yang dazzling tu...memang leh jadik singer lah...maybe can join Ahan kat karaoke, for voice training :) Leh ganti Waheeda yg dah retire..untung2 dapat laki muda macam Akhil?

Red Alfa (Romeo),
40 plus sounds too late, but in reality, its never too late for anything...even Rasullulah SAW preparation dia kat 40 tahun kan before he was given the message?

Hi MM,
Circumstances are actually a blessing, they force us to ACT and I hope you get there, dear!

Melbourne sounds nice...sebelum mati nak visit Mekkah, North Africa, Turkey, Australia (dunno whylah..i like the images from McLeod's Daughters and The Sullivans...haha)

Hi Saya,

When I was young, I wanted to be a lawyer and something like Paula Abdul. Then later, I became a teacher, resigned after 5 years of service, and now a housewife (already desperate). Next week, I am going to start with new job as a copywriter. Now i want to be more than Yasmin Ahmad was.

Hmm..oh yes, I wanted to be a model for fashion mags too but ended up doing the catwalk because I was told that I am not photogenic..nasib saya.

Sometimes I wish I am what I was when I wished I was what I am now.
(Errr... does that make any sense?)

When I was little, becoming a stewardess never came to mind - maybe because sedar diri ni kasar nak mampus... tak sesuai kerja-kerja ladylike ni!
