Najib wins Umno president post uncontested
By SHAHANAAZ HABIB and NURBAITI HAMDAN

KUALA LUMPUR: Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak is on track to becoming the nation’s sixth prime minister after he won the Umno presidency unopposed, receiving his 133rd nomination from the Cameron Highlands division on Sunday.

Among the divisions that nominated him on Sunday were Teluk Kemang, Tawau, Ayer Hitam, Tanjung Malim, Batu Kawan, Segamat, Sekijang, Tampin, Kuala Pilah, Balik Pulau, Kapar, Indera Mahkota and Bentong.

A candidate needs 58 of the 191 nominations to be eligible to contest. By passing the 133 mark, he has denied any interested candidate the possibility of contesting because the person would not be able to secure the required 58 nominations.

Tengku Razaleigh Hamzah, who received his first nomination for the presidency on Saturday from his own Gua Musang division, has been left out in the cold.

He was the only candidate who wanted to take Najib on for the presidency.

Najib garnered another four nominations giving him a total of 137 by 6pm.

Another nine divisions are meeting Sunday.

Najib will be officially assuming his seat in March during the Umno general assembly.

The current Umno president Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi decided not to defend his post and to pass over his mantle to his deputy.

By convention, the Umno president becomes Malaysia’s Prime Minister.

all party members must by hooks or by crook, keep a certain tan sri from selangor who is vying for the deputy president post at bay and deny his chance of becoming the next DPM. failure to do so will make way for him to go for the top post and if that happens, we will have a moron running the the country.

Sad isn't it. The dearth of good, clean men and women. So where did them good men and women go? I doubt all of them had gone the way of Ayah Pin or Ustadz Asha'ari. Maybe becoming apolitical Tablighs. I really doubt that.

And I doubt too that leaders of yesteryears were all that squeaky clean. They too might have closets full of skeletons. Because some of their offsprings are still around, doing their bit to bankrupt the country. But they definitely tried their best to be seen and accepted as good, clean and humble leaders.

The thing is, politics had become mired with big money, big business and of course big families. Those dudes and dudettes from influential or wealthy families and/or their friends, will definitely have a sound headstart. Their path to being top echelons of the party had been laid for them. Semak samun dan belukar yang mengacau sudah ditebas. And when on top, do what them Romans did. Them orgies and flatulent extravagance included. And they in turn will definitely suppress any opposition to their 'throne', especially from the better or cleaner politicians.

Yeah, we can vote for a change. A lot of people will vote for a change. Thing is, that change is not a candidate.

So how? Apart from saving for me one way ticket to the Bahamas.
