When it is dark enough, you can see the stars...

Losing Our Milky Way...
How many of us have actually seen the majestic Milky Way? How many of our children have seen it? How many of us realise that the night sky we often take for granted or just take a cursory, disinterested peek at, actually looks like this:
But we can't see the beauty of His Creation because of Light Pollution?
Read the Vanishing Night by Verlyn Klinkerborg ....
How can we expect our children to become astronomers, scientists...when they have not even seen the wonders of the heavens...I haven't shown my children what I should.
Have you?
"Milky Way (Britannica Elementary Encyclopedia):
On a dark, clear night, it is usually easy to see a dusty white band of stars stretching across the sky. This is the Milky Way galaxy, a massive collection of stars, dust, and clouds of gas. The Milky Way contains hundreds of billions of stars. It is only one of billions of galaxies in the universe."

Steven...
Aren't you one? hehehe...have you ever seen the Milky Way by the way Mr GreenMan?
Surely, we are in it, I mean, the Milky Way. We are right on the edge, hence we can see the rest of it. The only real Milky Way I know is a chocolate bar by Cadbury's, can you get it in Bolehland?
Yes, we are. In it.
Maybe you can get me the other Milky way when you come again in March!
And figs...
And the Aston...
And Chris Martin...
And...the Queen's Crown Jewels...heheh...
Two I can promise...but you guess which two..haha..( who's Chris Martin?)
Yay! you're getting the Aston and the figs!
Never was partial to jewellery, anyway...
Aston in Blue please...Vantage 1977.
Chris martin is the nasal sounding lead of coldplay lah...Love that Vida something song...
Salam MT,
Ever wonder why the name is milky way. Milk in latin is galakto, the root word for galaxy, also to mean cluster of particles.
So perhaps milky way would carry a meaning cluster of stars in our way. Well, I could be wrong.
How about this...Milk is actually a suspension of fat particles right, so just like the planets and the stars etc all 'suspended' in space, just like milk, hence milky. Can't figure the 'way' bit though...hmmm
Also, planets are fatty..QED
wsalam PS and Hi Steven!
Here:
Where does the name "Milky Way" come from?
Where does the naming Milky Way for our Galaxy come from? Do you know who introduced this wording and why?
The name Milky Way refers to the milky patch of sky which rings the Earth. You may have seen it if you live outside of a big city, it looks almost like very tenuous clouds to the naked eye. It was named in prehistory before anyone really knew what it was, so just called the "Milky Way" for its appearance. It wasn't until Gallileo looked at an area of it with his telescope in the 1600s that it was realised that the Milky Way was made up of thousands of individual stars, and it was even later that it was realised that what we are looking at is an edge on view of our own galaxy, one of billions in the universe.
An interesting fact related to this is that the word galaxy actually comes from the Greek word, galactos for milk! The Latin version of Milky Way is Via Lactea, with "Via" meaning "Way" or "Road" and "Lactea" meaning "Milk".

Whatz QED Steven?
Q.E.D. is an abbreviation of the Latin phrase "quod erat demonstrandum" which means literally, "that which was to be demonstrated".
Nam..I like my version better.. fatty planets.
Besides, prehistory people drink milk? I guess they do..like cavemen? Flintstones?

Makes one feel insignificant doesn't, the milky way?.
Must confess it's the first time I've heard of light pollution and the need for dark night skies.
Did some trawling after reading this and your kids may be interested in this interactive program by UCAR
UCAR = The University Corporation for Atmospheric Research.
Also lots of activities for kids (age < 50) to enjoy at GLOBE.
Unfortunately Malaysia is not a member country of GLOBE. So much for whetting the interest of our future Angkasawans.
Hai..why didn't I see this comment?Hei svllee!
I believe in aliens too!I get this psychic connection I was an alien once a upon a time thousands of years ago!And thats why I think my 'people' help earthlings to build the Great Pyramids, the great Wall of China,Stonehenge,Aztec Pyramids and many more that baffled scientists till today!!Well???

Are you sure that photo wasn't touched up in some way using photoshop? Heheh...
This brings back a childhood memory. Back when we were kids, my dad loved to sit outside after dinner just to enjoy the night air (actually, he wanted to smoke hehehe) and we kids used to join him. What we almost always do was to look up at the sky and beamed at the stars and moon with childhood enthusiasme and curiosity. And told magical/horror stories. I used to stare at the moon trying to see (or even make up) the image of a woman cradling a baby that my brother said was there. Now when I look at the moon, I see the image automatically.
I don't remember seeing as many stars now as I used to then. Maybe that's because I rarely look up anymore :-(
Wow! If the weather is good, I might just go outside tonight and lie down on the grass and see what I've been missing...
Steven...
WooLLy milk, not for moi...they say goatee milk better.
Ya Tabibcaptcalicojackdunnowhattocalluanymore,

I love the night skies. Took up astronomy as an elective in uni, (was professor's pet, as all the American kids were more into boozy nights...hahaha), but sadly have forgotten much of what I learnt (momnesia)and tak banyak practical. Ade Muslim Kids' scientist setup kat Ampang that takes kids camping and gives basic stargazing courses taught by an astronomer...so maybe I will send them (when I scrape the money together...hahaha)
Declination, parsec, arc sec, minute, degree, aberration, AUs etc2....sound like greek to me now after like almost a decade!
Thanks for the link, will definitely check it out with kids.
BTW, the proverb...from 3 cups of Tea...beli semalam and that was the first sentence! They must do somethinglah about book prices, to encourage people to read...
And how did you know my mum's name is MUMTAZ? hahaha....
